It’s an exciting time at The Henley College. Since joining as Principal in September, Simon Spearman has brought a renewed sense of direction and energy to the College, with a clear focus on student experience, academic quality, and stronger links with employers and the wider community.
With nearly 30 years of experience in education and a background in Business and Economics, Simon understands the importance of balancing high standards with a supportive, inclusive environment. His arrival marks the beginning of a new phase for the College, one that builds on its strengths while looking ahead with confidence and ambition.
Central to this is the launch of the College’s new Strategic Plan, which sets out its priorities through to 2028. The plan outlines a commitment to providing students with the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to succeed—whether they progress to university, an apprenticeship, or employment. It also ensures that the College continues to respond to the needs of a changing workforce, in line with the government’s Skills for Jobs White Paper.
Students at The Henley College benefit from a broad and flexible curriculum, with over 40 courses across A Levels, T Levels and vocational programmes. These are delivered by expert teachers who are passionate about helping every student achieve their full potential. The College’s Aspire Programme continues to support high-performing students applying to leading universities, including Oxford, Cambridge and members of the Russell Group, while its expanding T Level offer ensures students gain hands-on experience in key growth sectors such as health, science, digital, engineering and business.
There is also a strong commitment to investing in the learning environment. Students now have access to industry-standard resources including virtual reality technology, robotics, and high-spec engineering equipment. The recently developed Creative Media Hub offers a professional setting for students studying media, photography, and music production, with digital suites, recording studios and a photography studio all now in use.
Crucially, the College continues to grow its partnerships with employers and community organisations. These include Vikaso, Royal Berkshire NHS Trust, Chelton Aerospace, Thames Water, Millwright Engineering and Ciphr, all of whom are helping to shape high-quality placements and career opportunities for students. The College also works closely with Henley Town Council, the Kenton Theatre and the River & Rowing Museum, reinforcing its role as a key part of the local community.
Outside the classroom, students benefit from a rich programme of enrichment, sport and leadership. Partnerships with Wycombe Wanderers Football Club, Henley Hawks and Saracens Rugby allow talented athletes to pursue their sporting ambitions while continuing their studies, alongside a range of extracurricular activities designed to support wellbeing, creativity and confidence.
The Henley College has a proud heritage dating back over 400 years, and today it remains focused on ensuring that every student can thrive—academically, professionally and personally. With a new strategic plan in place and a shared vision for the future, the College is well positioned to meet the changing needs of its students and the region it serves.
