We live in a digital age. Mobile technology, social networking, cloud computing and internet-based systems have all radically changed the way we live over the last 15 years. This vocational course, equivalent to three A Levels, has been designed to give you a broad understanding of Computing IT to help you to identify which area you might want to pursue in the future.
You may be required to complete an activity before you start in order to help introduce you to the subject. Check back in the summer term for more details.
Your first year will give you an introduction to the general principles of Computing and ICT. Mandatory topics include IT systems, creating an IT system for information management, Cyber Security, Programming using VB.NET, IT Service Delivery and Project Management.
The course is heavily focused on helping students learn about how IT is used in the modern world and how IT solutions are scoped, designed, planned, built and tested. It meets entry requirements for progression to a degree course in information technology and related areas. The Henley College is part of the Microsoft DreamSpark program, and therefore Visual Studio is free to download for all students.
In the second year you will build fully functional, fully interactive web-based solutions. You will learn how to program multimedia animations using Adobe Animate and ActionScript and build 2D and 3D graphics. In addition there will be a unit on Computer Games Development.
This course is excellent preparation for students who wish to progress to university to study Computer Science, Computer Forensics, Game Design, Multimedia or Information Technology. In addition, students are well placed for apprenticeships in IT, with past students achieving employment at organisations such as CISCO and Microsoft.
Last year students went on to a variety of destinations including university places at Oxford Brookes, Brunel, Portsmouth, Royal Holloway, Reading, Northampton, Nottingham, Winchester and Essex.
Students are required to complete at least 30 hours of enrichment per academic year whilst studying at The Henley College, learn more about Enrichment here.
