The National Extended Diploma is a vocational course equivalent to three A Levels and is ideally suited to students who wish to study the sciences and are particularly interested in how science can help the criminal justice system.
You may be required to complete an activity before you start in order to help introduce you to the subject. Check back in the summer term for more details.
There is a series of thirteen units studied over the two years of the course. Four of the units are externally assessed whilst the other nine are internally assessed (coursework). The course gives you a good grounding in advanced science subjects such as the ‘human physiology’ microbiology’ and ‘chemical analysis’ units as well as extending knowledge in the forensic and criminology fields of study in units such as ‘Criminal investigation procedures’ and ‘Forensic Fire Investigation’.
You will participate in field trips and benefit from a range of speakers. You will also have the opportunity to apply for work experience in science industry or criminal justice system.
You will develop a wide range of practical, transferrable skills and be assessed continuously through the coursework element.
This course is an accepted qualification for entry particularly science related
degrees and those relating to criminology, criminal psychology and forensics.
Alternatively students may consider direct entry into employment or further training.
Higher Education
Studying forensic science and criminology at The Henley College opens up a variety of exciting career pathway within the fields of criminology, forensic science, law and psychology. This industry is a cross between the medical and legal sectors and plays an important role in everything from solving serious crimes to supporting the legal system in the courts. Employment opportunities within the Forensic Science Sector have surged dramatically, primarily propelled by technological advancements like the National DNA Database. Moreover, police forces increasingly rely on forensic techniques even for minor offenses, further fuelling this growth.
Career
This course is a great stepping stone for working, in the surveillance industry either as a private investigator or as an MI5 Surveillance Officer (MSO), join the police forces, pursuing an apprenticeship in Forensic science or Crime Scene Investigator. Other students might choose a more academic career path and study at University Criminal Investigation, Forensic Psychology, Forensic science and Criminology with Law. UK university graduates are in high demand as a dynamic and constantly evolving profession.
