Geography

An incredibly flexible and wide-ranging subject, Geography is ideally suited to students who are interested in the many factors which affect our planet and how we live. It allows us to appreciate how and why both smaller and larger changes occur, and how we need to adapt as a result.

Before You Start

You may be required to complete an activity before you start in order to help introduce you to the subject. Check back in the summer term for more details.

Course Content

Geography is a core earth science and allows you to develop an understanding of key scientific, environmental, and economic principles and issues. Areas of study will include coastal systems and landscapes, water and carbon cycles, hazards, global systems and global governance, changing places, and contemporary urban environments.

You will develop research skills, using a range of techniques for the collection and analysis of spatial and environmental data, and undertaking fieldwork. Also, many transferable skills, such as teamwork, problem solving, IT skills, communication skills (presentation, writing, debating) which is why Geography graduates have the lowest rate of unemployment. 

This course presents a variety of opportunities to undertake fieldwork including 4 days of mandatory fieldwork, with recent trips to locations including Brick Lane and Christchurch Bay, the Bay of Naples, and the Atlas Mountains.

You are also encouraged to supplement your programme with the Extended Project.

Life After Henley

Last year students went on to various destinations including university places at Cambridge University, Exeter,  Newcastle, Swansea, Nottingham Trent, York, South Wales, Southampton Solent, Royal Holloway, Winchester, Plymouth, Chester, Oxford Brookes, Cardiff, Bath Spa, Bournemouth, and Warwick.

Geography graduates have one of the highest rates of graduate employment, pursuing a wide range of career paths including: Cartographer, Commercial/residential surveyor, Environmental consultant, Geographical information systems officer, Planning and development surveyor, Town planner, International aid/development worker, Landscape architect, Logistics and distribution manager, Nature conservation officer and Political risk analyst.

Careers

There are various options for students considering a career in the field of Geography including urban planning and community development, cartography, GIS, Climatology, environmental management and research. Students may consider direct entry into related employment.

Higher Education
