Overview

Course Overview

Politics will appeal to students who have a genuine interest in current affairs, combined with an ability to analyse and evaluate questions logically, using relevant supporting evidence. Students will examine the effects democracy and participation, political parties, electoral systems, voting behaviour and the media. They will explore core political ideas: conservatism, liberalism, socialism and the impact of the UK constitution, Parliament, Prime Minister and executive, and the UK Supreme Court. In year 2 students will study American politics and compare structural, cultural and rational similarities and differences between the two systems.

Standard entry requirements to include grade 5 in GCSE English and grade 4 in
Maths.
Exam board: Edexcel

Whilst the course provides an excellent preparation for the study of subjects such as politics, international relations, law, economics and business at university, it also offers a strong grounding for those wishing to pursue many other subject areas at degree level.

Name: ADRIAN
Course: GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS

I came to The Henley College from Theale Green School in Berkshire. Government and Politics wasn't a course they offered at my previous school so it was one of the main reasons I decided to apply to The Henley College. I'm also studying Biology, History and French, mixing languages with politics was something that was new for me, but definitely the right path as the two interconnect so much.

What I have found engaging about the Politics A Level is how relevant and topical the issues that we study are in the current political atmosphere. As part of the A2 syllabus, we study the politics of the EU and its implication on UK politics, something that we can all agree has been discussed at large with the referendum. For me, it has been very interesting to be able to have a better understanding of the way our political system is run, and the key debates covered in the course reflects the current controversies and issues that are in the news.

Once I've finished college I've decided to go to university and study languages (French and ab initio Russian) and European Studies. This reflects all three of my A2 subjects, as the course requires a strong understanding of historical context to broaden your understanding of current problems. Combined with these languages, it will provide me with the variety that I am looking for, and cannot wait to start in September!
